Cultural heritage is not saved by databases. It is saved by people — by those who document it, visit it, discuss it and keep it visible.
That is why building and fostering a community is such an important part of the Atlas Sovieticus. We regularly connect with people around the world through events, discussions and both online and offline meet-ups. On this page, you can discover what we do, and how you can join us!
More than an Archive
The Atlas began as an effort to make monumental artworks created between the 1930s and 1990s across the former USSR and beyond, more accessible. But an archive is only as alive as the people who contribute to it. Every photograph, correction, discovery, field visit and conversation helps preserve a cultural landscape that is disappearing.
That’s why the Atlas Sovieticus is more than just an interactive map. It’s an open and collaborative initiative with a community at its core.
Throughout the years, our project (specifically the Interactive Map) has received hundreds of individual submissions, collaborated with more than 50 partners, spoken on conferences and has created memories with those who create and enjoy monumental artworks.
The Atlas lives beyond the screen
Researchers, photographers, travellers, and enthusiasts seek out these artworks, document their discoveries, photograph what remains, and bring forgotten works back into the conversation. Together, we bridge the gap between those who want to experience and preserve this cultural heritage and the decision-makers who determine their fate. As one community, we can raise awareness, inspire action, and make a difference.
As part of our profound focus on community-engagement, our organization often organizes events and both online and offline meet-ups.
